Indian Institutes for Human Settlements (IIHS) brings a Urban Fellows Program (UFP). The programme is mainly open for the recent graduates and the young professionals belongs to different educational backgrounds or domains. The 2023 batch will going to be a seventh batch of UFP.
What is Urban Fellows Program?
Urban Fellows Program is mainly a scholarship based program which lasts for nine months. The scholarship will cover the residential, full-time, interdisciplinary, and is based at the IIHS City Campus in Bengaluru. The scholarship program will cover the classroom teaching, work in live projects, site-based applied learning, and external internships to introduce Fellows to diverse forms of urban practice. This programme is followed by two months of internship placements in locations where a fellow’s particular internship organization is located. The selected candidates will receive tuition fees and stipend to cover daily living expenses.

Who are eligible to apply for this scholarship?
An applicant must:
- be an Indian citizen
- be below 30 years at the time of the UFP’s commencement
- hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject or discipline
- have basic proficiency in reading English (Note: There is support available for candidates with limited speaking ability in English)

Benefits you will receive
Selected candidates will receive a tuition fee of INR 2,30,000 plus GST for the entire programme which will be payable to Fellows in three installments over the year. The feel will include all costs of travel for the UFP on exposure visits as well as expenditure on local and intercity travel for UFP Practica and applied projects.
All the admitted Fellows are required to pay a deposit of INR 20, 000 to secure their admission which will be refunded at the end of the programme. Fellows in financial need can request a deposit waiver that will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the time of admission to the UFP.
In addition to scholarships that cover tuition fees, there are a limited number of stipends available to cover daily living expenses for candidates with significant financial need. The candidates wishing to be considered for this will have a chance to indicate so in the admission forms.

Required documents for the IIHS Urban Fellows Programme 2023-24
- Personal Statement and Essays: This section consists of three shorter essay questions that need to be completed. Please note that all three essays are mandatory.
- The first essay is about the applicants’ motivation to apply (up to 300 words) and is focused on their interest in the UFP and its elements.
- The second essay (200 words), focuses on the applicants’ experiences and the ways in which these led to their interest in the Urban.
- The third essay requires the applicants’ to choose one out of five problem statements provided and give their response to it (up to 400 words) Audio-visual material or other material of their own making that complements the application (Note – It can be uploaded or sent in).
- Any other information the applicants’ would like to provide (up to 200 words).
- A Sample of Work: One sample of academic or professional work that best describes the applicants’ capabilities and interests. The sample may take any form: e.g. text, plans, portfolios, audio files and visual media. The sample of work should preferably be their individual effort. In case the applicants include work representing team effort, please specify details of their particular contribution and role.
