The Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship is a research center hosted at the American University of Beirut that bridges academia and activism. Focusing on documenting and analyzing political participation, social movements, and engagement, the Asfari Institute aims to consolidate civil society initiatives locally and regionally in the Arab world.
About the Role
The Asfari Institute is looking for a Research Consultant to conduct in-depth research on the backlash against anti-rights movements and feminist responses in Jordan, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- The consultant will be responsible for designing research plans, analyzing socio- political contexts, collecting data, and producing reports and policy briefs with actionable recommendations.
- Candidates must have a demonstrable commitment to gender equality and social justice.
- Candidates must also be independent, enthusiastic, and hardworking.

Eligibility
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in social sciences, gender studies, political science, sociology, or a related field.
- Proven understanding and application of an intersectional gender lens in research and advocacy work.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in research, particularly in human rights, gender equality, or social justice.
- Previous involvement in advocacy or civil society initiatives in Jordan or the broader MENA region.
- Strong knowledge of Jordan’s socio-political landscape, with specific insight into the challenges faced by feminist movements and anti-rights pushback.
- Proficient in designing and conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research.
- Skilled in thematic analysis, policy analysis, and stakeholder mapping.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Arabic and English.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including grassroots organizations, academics, and policymakers.
- Demonstrated ability to work sensitively and effectively in politically sensitive and culturally diverse environments.
